Usage of Microneedling for acne scars

Share on:

Microneedling has emerged as a popular acne scar treatment, well known for its potential to improve skin texture, reduce scars, and enhance overall skin appearance. Traditionally performed in clinical setting, microneedling has now become accessible for at-home use, with devices such as microneedling derma rollers, and derma stamps. This article explores the benefits of microneedling for acne scars and what to consider when trying out this treatment at home.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves using a device equipped with fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. These tiny micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing processes, prompting the production of the skin’s natural collagen layer. The result is improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, which in turn can help acne scars.

Originally a procedure performed by dermatologists and licensed aestheticians, microneedling devices have been made available for home use. At-home microneedling tools such as the Derma Stamp Pro, aim to offer similar benefits with a more accessible price tag.

The Results of Microneedling for acne scars

  1. Enhanced Skin Texture and improved acne scars: One of the primary benefits of microneedling is its ability to improve skin texture and tone. By stimulating collagen production, microneedling can reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and skin irregularities. People often report smoother, more even skin with regular treatments.
  2. Reduction of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Microneedling helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for skin elasticity and firmness. This makes it an appealing option for those looking to combat early signs of aging.
  3. Improved Product Absorption: Following a microneedling session, the skin’s ability to absorb skincare products is significantly enhanced. This means that serums and moisturizers can penetrate deeper into the skin, potentially increasing their effectiveness. For example, some users use high-quality vitamin C serums directly after their microneedling session to maximize their results. Our Founder, Arzutraa, swears by two Vitamin C Serums. Her first favourite vitamin C is PerriconeMD. Her second go to Vitamin C is by Medik8. In her own words, “I use the PerriconeMD one on a day to day basis but I use the Medik8 one after microneedling my face. This is because the PerriconeMD one is a little too strong for the days I am Microneedling the skin.”

What are the risks of Microneedling for Acne Scars?

Whilst microneedling is safe, there are some risks involved which we have highlighted below.

  1. Infection and Skin Irritation: One of the significant risks associated with at-home microneedling is the potential for infection if proper hygiene is not maintained. Additionally, improper use of the device or inadequate sterilization can lead to irritation or adverse reactions. We recommend ensuring you always clean the derma roller or derma stamp in an alcohol based solution after each use.
  2. Pain and Discomfort: At-home microneedling can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially if the needles are anything above 1.5mm. Some users opt to use a numbing cream but if you are using serums afterwards, the layer of numbing cream will not let the serum be absorbed into the skin. We recommend leaving the numbing cream. After a couple of sessions, you will get used to the ‘pricking’ sensation.
  3. Inconsistent Results: Results from at-home microneedling can vary widely. Factors such as the quality of the derma roller, the technique used, and the frequency of treatment can all impact outcome in treating acne scars. Remember that consistency is key. In addition, ensure you buy a microneedling device from a reputable brand.

Best Practices for Safe At-Home Microneedling for acne scars

To maximize the rewards of microneedling while minimizing risks, it’s essential to follow best practices:

  1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that both the device and your skin are clean before beginning treatment. Sterilize the microneedling device after with alcohol solution. You can find one easily on Amazon. Wash your face thoroughly ensuring it has no make up or dirt and do not use the device on broken or irritated skin. If in case of active acne, it is advisable that your skin has no active breakouts at the time of use as the skin can get further irritated.
  2. Make sure to get a high quality microneedling Device: We offer supreme quality devices for both the scalp to help with hair growth and the face which is particularly good for acne scarring. Our Founder, Arzutraa, spent years researching the best microneedling tools as she too suffered from acne and scars.
  3. Use High-Quality Skincare Products: After microneedling, the skin is more receptive to skincare products. Use gentle, high-quality serums and moisturizers like the Vitamin C Serums mentioned above to support the skin’s healing and to help enhance results.
  4. Avoid harsh chemicals: Make sure not to use any skincare with actives such as glycolic, retinol or salicylic acid three days either side of your microneedling session, as these are too harsh and are best left for when the skin’s outer layer has healed somewhat. Integrating a multi functional face oil treatment like Diamond Glow oil, known for its supreme nourishing properties, is also a good option. This is specifically formulated for balancing oils especially in acne prone skin.

Conclusion

Microneedling for acne scars offers promising results in it’s ability to improve skin texture. By choosing the right device, maintaining hygiene and consistent usage you can maximize the benefits and see results , sometimes within a month and at a fraction of the cost of in-clinic microneedling. Our Founder paid £450 in London for a single Microneedling session (yes, we hear you say crazy!) but it’s true. This was of course before she designed her own range of devices for home use.

Don’t forget whilst Microneedling is a great therapy for skin rejuvenation, combining it with healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and sun protection, will contribute to achieving the best possible results for your skin.
